Weather & Monday Update:
Happy Monday, Burlington. The week is kicking off with some genuinely warm weather, and we mean warm for early March. Expect partly sunny skies today with highs climbing into the upper 50s and possibly touching the low 60s, though wind gusts could make it slightly cooler. That rapid warmth is driving significant snowmelt, and ice jams have already caused flooding on several area rivers including the Ausable, Missisquoi, Mad, and Great Chazy. Burlington itself isn't seeing flooding, but the Champlain Valley should stay alert through midweek. Tuesday brings partly sunny skies with a slight chance of showers from a backdoor cold front, and highs will settle into the 50s. Wednesday is the day to watch: a low pressure system is expected to bring periods of rain, some of it potentially heavy, with highs in the upper 40s to low 50s. Thursday morning rain flips to snow by the afternoon, with a few inches possible and temperatures dropping fast from the 30s into the 20s. By the weekend, expect a return to more seasonable mid March conditions with highs in the mid to upper 30s and a chance for light snow showers.
Tonight's the night to show up and be heard if Burlington city governance is your thing. The City Council meets at 6:00 PM at Contois Auditorium with public forum starting at 6:30. The agenda is packed: a vote on a seven year contract with Casella Waste Management for residential recycling services, an appointment to the Housing Board of Review, and an update on the 2026 legislative session covering everything from housing policy to funding for the Overdose Prevention Center. The Progressive Caucus also wants to welcome incoming Ward 3 Councilor Laura Sánchez-Parkinson and congratulate Ward 8's Marek Broderick on his reelection. You can attend in person, join on Zoom, or watch live on Town Meeting TV. If you'd rather keep it casual, the Champlain Valley Lions Pizza Social starts at 6:00 PM at Allard Square (146 Market St) in South Burlington. It's a great, low pressure way to learn about a group that does everything from vision screening for kids to food insecurity work across the valley. And if you want to burn off some Monday energy, Pickup Dodgeball runs 7:00 to 8:15 PM at CP Smith Elementary for just five bucks. No team needed, just show up and throw. Also tonight, a Community of Poets Sharing Circle with Darlene Witte [MEETUP] meets from 7:00 to 9:00 PM, and the Book Club for Busy Women [MEETUP] gathers at 6:30 PM in Essex Junction to discuss Chapter 3 of Open Your Mind to Prosperity. And if you really want to feel the energy this week, it's playoff time at Patrick Gym for UVM Basketball! The UVM women host their America East semifinal tonight at 6:00 PM as the Catamounts look to punch their ticket to the championship game, and the men follow Tuesday night at 7:00 PM for their own semifinal matchup under the lights.
Tuesday brings a wonderful spread of options. With those mild temperatures still holding, it's a fine evening to wander downtown for Dog Days of Winter at Devil Takes A Holiday starting at 5:00 PM, where specialty hot dogs like kimchi, Michigan, and hot dog parm are on the menu with proceeds benefiting Passion 4 Paws Vermont. Film lovers, head to Main Street Landing's Film House at 7:00 PM for a free screening of Alfred Hitchcock's Rebecca, with donations supporting Big Brothers Big Sisters of NH & VT for the month of March. If you've been meaning to learn to sew, The Sandbox on Pine Street hosts a free beginner workshop from 4:00 to 5:30 PM where you'll bring your machine and they'll help you conquer bobbins and stitch tension once and for all. Over at Switchback Brewing, Bridgerton Trivia takes over from 7:00 to 9:00 PM for fans of Regency era drama and Lady Whistledown gossip. And crafters of all stripes are welcome at Knot Knite from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Queen City Brewery, where you can work on your Red Hat Project or any fiber project alongside good company, Queen City brews, and Pizza 44. Singers take note: Vermont's Freedom & Unity Chorus kicks off its 2026 season with the first rehearsal from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at Saint Michael's College Chapel in Colchester. No auditions, all voices welcome.
Wednesday and Thursday round out a packed week. On Wednesday morning, VTW Biz Buzz Burlington brings entrepreneurs and business owners together at Deep City Brunch & Events from 9:45 to 11:30 AM for casual networking over coffee and light breakfast ($13 ticket). Wednesday evening is a big one at the Flynn: All the Rivers, a global ensemble of over 20 international musicians from 10 countries who now call Vermont home, takes the main stage at 7:30 PM. One hundred percent of proceeds benefit organizations working with immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers in Vermont, and the show features music in six languages. It's going to be special. Also Wednesday, gardeners should swing by Switchback Brewing from 5:00 to 7:00 PM for a Seed Swap where you can trade extra seeds, browse what others have brought, or just grab something new to try this spring. And Wednesday is also International Women's Day Networking Breakfast at Champlain College from 8:45 to 11:00 AM, featuring speakers Claire Zhu (Hootie Hoo), Chelsea Bardot Lewis (VBSR), and Sipha Lam (Wilder Wines). Thursday’s also got a ton, RAR Bike Basics begins a three week series at Old Spokes Home from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, a hands on bike maintenance course for women, trans, and nonbinary folks with a 3:1 student to instructor ratio. Soapbox Arts celebrates its 7th anniversary from 5:30 to 8:00 PM at 237 St. Paul St with the opening of You're An Animal, a solo exhibition of mixed media ceramic sculptures by Burlington artist Jennifer McCandless that uses magical realism and clay to tackle topics like environmental destruction and inequality with humor and honesty. Pecha Kucha Burlington Volume 42 takes over Main Street Landing at 7:00 PM with eleven presenters delivering rapid fire visual storytelling on topics ranging from bespoke suits to crash maps to a podcast on feminism and fascism. You'll also hear talks on cookie baking obsessions, capsizing mishaps, Captain Kangaroo memories, and why you should make a website. Foam Brewers is running the cash bar starting at 6:00 PM, presentations kicking off at 7:00. Charlie Berens brings The Lost and Found Tour to the Flynn at 7:00 PM for fans of the Manitowoc Minute. Want to get out on the water this summer? Malia Racing's Dragon Boat Info Session is at 6:30 PM at the South Burlington Public Library with snacks and info about their competitive and recreational programs. Over in Essex Junction, Paint & Sip at Sparky's Bar & Grill runs 6:00 to 8:00 PM with a St. Patrick's Day theme and all materials provided. And if you're a night owl, Irish Karaoke at Rí Rá kicks off their St. Patrick's week celebrations from 10:00 PM to 1:00 AM, with EDM Night: Genre Smash at Einstein's Tap House going from 10:00 PM to 2:00 AM featuring four DJs and live canvas painting. Five bucks at the door.

"I always support the school budget, because schools are really important," per Community News Service.
This ward by ward snapshot from UVM's Community News Service captures the texture of Town Meeting Day across the city. In Ward 4, voters largely backed the proposed $140.8 million school budget, which would bring per student spending to about $15,775. Ward 5 saw split opinions on permanently establishing the Office of Racial Equity, with one voter welcoming its formalization and another calling it "further divisiveness." Ward 6 wrestled with the police and fire tax increase, with longtime residents citing downtown safety concerns and a UVM student pushing back on costs. And in Ward 7, the contested council race between incumbent Evan Litwin and Progressive Bill Standen drew voters who said they wanted the focus kept squarely on Burlington, not international politics.
"These folks aren't the ones who have barriers. It's our system that has barriers," per WCAX.
The Elmwood Community Shelter, better known as the Burlington pods, has served 149 guests since opening, but 99 of those left without finding permanent housing. Managers announced Wednesday that shelter in some form will likely remain a permanent fixture in the Old North End, noting the pods have a ten year lifespan and would be replaced by permanent shelter if ever removed. The average stay is 250 days, and beds fill immediately when someone leaves. Ward 3 Steering Committee member Zachary Cummings captured the neighborhood tension well: residents broadly understand the need for the program but remain divided over issues of accountability and transparency, particularly around what the low barrier model brings to the surrounding area.
"These results reflect years of hard work, careful policy development, and honest conversations with our community," per Vermont Business Magazine.
On Town Meeting Day, 70% of Burlington voters approved a $0.05 police and fire tax rate increase, and 57% approved a charter change formally establishing the Office of Racial Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging. The tax increase funds negotiated salary and benefit agreements, two new firefighter positions, and six first responder vehicles, and had bipartisan council support along with backing from three municipal unions. The REIB charter change comes at a moment when equity and inclusion initiatives face national headwinds, making Burlington's vote a notable local counterpoint.
"In the case of the Vermont Air National Guard and the 158th Fighter Wing, they were mobilized for Operation Absolute Resolve and then were tasked to take their F-35As across the Atlantic," per Seven Days.
The confirmation came during a Pentagon press conference where Gen. Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, named Vermont among several Guard units deployed to support what's being called "Operation Epic Fury," the U.S. and Israeli bombardment of Iran. Burlington's 158th Fighter Wing had originally been mobilized for the strike in Venezuela before being redirected to the Middle East. All three members of Vermont's federal delegation have condemned the war. The human toll has been severe on both sides, with over 500 Iranian casualties reported and three U.S. service members killed.
"This latest scheme is a blatant attempt to circumvent the Supreme Court's decision," per Vermont Public.
Attorney General Charity Clark joined 23 other states in filing suit at the U.S. Court of International Trade after the president imposed new across the board tariffs under a different legal authority following the Supreme Court's rejection of his original tariff regime. Vermont has skin in this game beyond the AG's office: a Burlington cycling apparel company, Terry Precision Cycling, served as a plaintiff in an earlier related lawsuit. The core legal argument is that Trump is misusing the Trade Act of 1974 by conflating trade deficits with the statute's more specific "balance of payments" language, effectively seizing taxation power that belongs to Congress.
"Even though I'm American, I'm still scared of any kind of interaction with ICE or any police officer in the U.S.," per Seven Days.
That's César Camacho, a UVM junior and U.S. citizen who grew up in Ecuador and now carries his passport at all times with a location tracking app at his mother's request. The piece paints a sobering picture of how federal immigration policy is rippling through Vermont's colleges. At Middlebury, a Sudanese student got her visa days before the travel ban took effect and now cannot leave the country for four years. UVM's international enrollment has dropped by half since peaking in 2017, and the university's VP for enrollment said plainly that the U.S. isn't a place international students feel safe coming to right now. St. Johnsbury Academy had three accepted Nigerian students denied visas last fall.
"I think I would be concerned about a state that didn't have any cases of fraud. That would suggest to me that they weren't looking," per VTDigger.
That's Vermont Medicaid director Jill Mazza Olson responding to a letter from the U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce requesting information about the state's Medicaid program. Vermont was one of ten states targeted, almost all Democrat led. The probe cites Minnesota's Medicaid fraud investigation as a jumping off point. Vermont's Medicaid program spent $2.3 billion in 2024, with $1.45 billion coming from federal dollars, and serves over 156,900 residents. The state recently made a controversial change to how it bills for ABA therapy, partly to get ahead of exactly this kind of federal scrutiny.
"We, the Legislature, didn't want to tie our hands so much at this point," per VTDigger.
That's Sen. Andrew Perchlik, chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, explaining why lawmakers held off on committing to Gov. Scott's proposal to use $74.9 million in excess revenue for property tax relief. The concern is that federal funding cuts could force the state to redirect those dollars elsewhere. The $111 million increase includes a $34 million bump for Medicaid, $4.6 million more for prison health care through Wellpath, and $500,000 for a pilot court model in Burlington. The budget also sets up a safety net mechanism for housing vouchers in case HUD funding falls short, allowing housing authorities to apply for state dollars if federal support doesn't cover their needs.
"Ultimately, we're never going to get costs for ratepayers down until we deal with the cost of care," per Seven Days.
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Vermont reported operating gains of more than $50 million in 2025 after a four year streak of losses that nearly sank the nonprofit insurer. The company had to take a $30 million loan from its Michigan affiliate in 2024 just to stay afloat, which it has since repaid. The turnaround is real, but context matters: Vermont's health insurance costs remain among the nation's highest, with the cheapest marketplace plan averaging $808 per month in 2024, more than double the national average. A recent state law capping what hospitals can charge for outpatient prescription drugs helped cut proposed rate increases by more than half, and a broader policy tying hospital prices to Medicare rates is on the way.
"If Vermont or New Hampshire or Maine are going to grow, they're going to grow through migration," per VTDigger.
That's UNH senior demographer Ken Johnson, and the numbers back him up: 726 more Americans left Vermont than came to it between 2024 and 2025, the lowest domestic migration figure in years. The pandemic era influx of remote workers and nature seekers has clearly reversed. International migration, which had been offsetting some losses, also slowed to just over 600 new arrivals, down from more than 1,000 per year in prior years. Combined with an aging population where deaths outpace births, Vermont ranked last in the nation for population growth. The story of Jenny Hopkins, who moved to Maine after a nine month wait for a psychiatric evaluation, captures the kind of quality of life frustration that's pushing people out.
"Music is that medicine that sometimes we need as a society," per Seven Days.
This deep profile of All the Rivers, the 20 member global ensemble performing at the Flynn on Wednesday, is well worth a full read. Founded by Burlington musician Avi Salloway, the band features musicians from ten countries performing in six languages, blending everything from West African balafon to Colombian zamba to indie folk. The piece profiles Colombian singer Cintia Lovo Arias, Congolese Catholic Choir leader Dr. Jules Wetchi, and West African percussionists Ousmane Camara and Assane Coly, among others. Beyond the music, All the Rivers is a nonprofit with a $100,000 crowdfunding campaign underway, and all Flynn show proceeds go to organizations like Migrant Justice and AALV. Salloway has been working 40 to 50 hours a week unpaid on the project for six months. A companion piece from the Community News Service features Wetchi describing what the project means to him: "We have to be united. We have to build the world together."
"We're bringing back the classics," per Seven Days.
Shane Corbett has opened a nostalgia driven pizza shop at 1 Market Place in Essex, modeled on the pizza joints of the late '80s and early '90s. The menu features six pies, including a hot honey with arugula, and Italian subs named after Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles characters, all served on seeded semolina rolls baked in house. Corbett got his start at Essex Junction's now closed Lincoln Inn at 15, later co launched the original Taco Gordo food cart on Church Street, and was most recently selling insurance before a commercial pizza oven sitting in his garage finally convinced him to get back in the game. The 14 seat spot stays open until 10 PM on weekends, with hopes to push to midnight.

Vermont Ranks Last in Fast Food, Study Reveals — A study by Seating Masters found Vermont has the fewest fast food restaurants per capita in the nation at 27.65 per 100,000 residents, roughly half the rate of top ranked West Virginia. UVM Athletics: Men's Basketball and Hockey Win, Lacrosse Teams Drop Narrow Contests
The Vermont men's basketball team secured a decisive 77-57 victory over Bryant in the America East Quarterfinals at Patrick Gym. TJ Hurley led all players with 29 points, connecting on five of his seven three-point attempts. The win marks Vermont's 17th straight America East Semifinal appearance. The men's ice hockey team wrapped up their regular season with a 5-3 win over No. 18 Maine at Gutterson Fieldhouse. The Catamounts' eight Hockey East victories this year are the program's most since the 2016-17 campaign.
In women's lacrosse, Vermont mounted a fourth-quarter comeback that ultimately fell short in a 14-12 non-conference loss to Villanova. Jane Trauger tallied a game-high five points with four goals and one assist, and Lydia Doraz recorded a hat trick. The Catamounts will conclude their homestand against Fairfield on Wednesday, March 11 at 1 p.m. at Virtue Field.
The men's lacrosse team dropped a tight 7-6 road contest to No. 19 UMass. Cullen Decker led the offense with two goals, while Walter Zhao scooped up 10 ground balls and went 15-for-17 on faceoffs. Vermont will return home to host UMBC to open conference play on Saturday, March 14 at 12 p.m. at Virtue Field.
Both the men's and women's track and field teams finished 10th at the New England Championships. For the women, Caroline Deiss claimed second place in the 5000m, and Ryleigh Garrow secured a podium finish in the high jump. For the men, Will Just earned silver in the mile, and Nate Wanger clocked the second-fastest 400m time in Catamount history.
