Weather & Weekend Rundown:
There’s so, so much going on this weekend in Burlington. I almost didn’t make today’s newsletter because I’m on vacation, but so much happening I couldn’t let you guys down! Yesterday's rowdy weather has cleared out, and we're settling into a much calmer stretch just in time for the weekend. Today starts mostly cloudy with a few breaks of sun, and while a stray shower or even an isolated rumble of thunder could pop up around town this afternoon and evening, nothing severe is in the cards. Highs land right around 70. Saturday turns cooler and grayer, with clouds in charge and scattered showers drifting through, so keep a light layer handy as temperatures hover in the upper 60s to low 70s. Sunday, conveniently enough for Father's Day, looks like the brighter and warmer of the two, with more sunshine, highs in the mid 70s, and only a spotty shower or stray afternoon storm to watch for. If you have outdoor plans this weekend, Sunday is your safest bet.
The World Cup has Btown buzzing this afternoon. Citizen Cider on Flynn Avenue throws a USA versus Australia watch party from 3 to 5:30 PM, where landing a finger soccer goal scores your group a free side of fries. Over at Centennial Field, the Lake Monsters host their own free watch along starting at 3 PM with gates at 2:30, and every guest gets a complimentary drink, a hot dog, chips, and entry to the baseball game that follows. If you find yourself downtown, RiRa on Church Street pairs the same match with free Guinness glass engraving from 3 to 5 PM. Friday evening leans warm and community minded. South Burlington Recreation hosts a Juneteenth Community Dinner at 180 Market Street from 6 to 8:30 PM, featuring a menu from Le Bon Gout and a free showing of Soul afterward (registration required). The proudly queer, trans, and femme run Resistance Arts Collective on College Street pairs an all levels karate class with a screening of The Matrix from 6 to 10 PM. Out in Shelburne, Sisters of Anarchy serves up Food Truck Friday, and the Forever 38 [MEETUP] is meeting from 5 to 8 PM with live music from Tournesol and farm to cone ice cream. For music choices, Kurt Vile and The Violators bring their latest tour to Higher Ground at 8 PM, while the Skinny Pancake waterfront kicks off its summer Dancing in the Streets series with a free outdoor set from Grateful Dead inspired trio Organized Dead from 8 to 11 PM. Odd Fellows on North Avenue hosts an all ages, sober punk, ska, and emo night headlined by Father Before Me with doors at 6:30 PM, 90 Proof plays rock covers on the outdoor stage at The Old Post from 7 to 10 PM, and Winooski's Monkey House runs a 21 and up set of pop, Afrobeats, and house with the BTown favorite DJ, Kwame Dankwa from 9 PM. For laughs, Shelburne Vineyard's tank room hosts Wit and Wine with doors at 7 PM. The Vermont Quilt Show also wraps its run at the DoubleTree Expo Center, open 9 AM to 4 PM today and again Saturday.
Saturday morning has plenty for early risers, clouds and all. There is a free 5k social run at the waterfront beside Foam Brewers at 9 AM with coffee at Jitters after, plus our easygoing BTown Coffee Club [MEETUP] at Zero Gravity on Pine Street from 10 AM to noon. Car folks can catch VAE Cars and Coffee at the University Mall from 7 to 9 AM, board gamers have Board Game Brunch [MEETUP] in Williston from 9 AM to noon, and green thumbs can pitch in at the Miner Memorial Garden Workday at the UVM Hort Farm from 10 to noon, muffins provided. Down at the Burlington waterfront, neighbors mark their tenth volunteer Urban Reserve clean up from 10 AM to 2 PM. Midday, the Ethan Allen Homestead stages a free Revolutionary War reenactment with musket firings and open fire cooking from 11 AM to 2 PM, running again Sunday. Laboratory B on North Street holds its Old North End Repair Cafe from 11 AM to 3 PM, where volunteers will fix your broken lamps, bikes, and clothing for free, with knife sharpening now on the menu. Families can make art at the BCA Center's Family Art Saturday from 11 AM to 1 PM, Winooski's Retro Galaxy celebrates its first anniversary from 11 AM to 7 PM, and collectors can browse the diecast show and sale at the University Mall from 10:30 AM to 4 PM. Pug people, Switchback hosts Pints for Pugs from 1 to 5 PM, and a daylong painted barn quilt class runs from 8:30 AM. Church Street Marketplace fills with music and vendors for Juneteenth from 1 to 9 PM.
Come evening, the North End Block Party takes over Brian's Auto lot at 98 North Avenue from 5 to 9 PM with food trucks, a mobile bar, and live music from the Jesse Taylor Band. The experimental Plex Arts Festival spreads across Junktiques, Old Spokes Home, Tank, and more starting at 5 PM, and City Hall Park hosts the Juneteenth Twilight concert with A2VT at 6 PM. The Lake Monsters play their Margaritaville Night at Centennial Field at 6:05 PM, complete with a jersey auction benefiting the Humane Society. On the music front, Foam Brewers closes the night with eight piece neo soul outfit High Summer from 9 to 11 PM, the Burlington Film and Stage Music Orchestra performs scores from Wicked to Star Wars at the UVM Recital Hall at 7:30 PM, and Soulshine Revival brings an Allman Brothers tribute to Shelburne Vineyard at 6:30 PM. Comedy fans can grab a seat for The Lowdown at Higher Ground, an 18 and up showcase with doors at 7 PM.
Sunday is Father's Day, and the Dad Guild's fourth annual weekend of festivities spans both days, from Saturday's dads and kids pinball and a dads only Father's Day Cup competition to a Sunday family bash at the Soda Plant from 9 AM to 2 PM with a Move Your Buns 5K, a magic show, free caricatures, and a grilled cheese bar. The Soda Plant also runs its monthly Sunday market from 10 AM to 2 PM, and I think this is their first weekend! Public Works invites everyone to Creemees and Coffee on the Parkway from 10 AM to noon for a free creemee and a first look at the soon to open Champlain Parkway. The Burlington Earth Clock holds a Summer Solstice Water Blessing at Blanchard Beach at 1 PM, so bring flowers, friends, and drums. Local Motion leads The Final Mile at 1:30 PM, a seven mile, easy paced ride along the last stretch of the Champlain Parkway open to bikes before it becomes a highway. Later, hop the bike train to the Lake Monsters game with Bike Me Out to the Ballgame, leaving the Old North End Community Center at 4:30 PM sharp for free admission and a bike valet. Also Sunday, Partizanfilm screens the 1973 comedy Paper Moon for Father's Day at 7 PM on College Street. WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley brings 40 Years of Foley to the Vermont Comedy Club with doors at 6:30 PM (sold out but can score tickets day of FCFS). Switchback runs an all day World Cup watch party from noon to 9 PM with beer and barbecue. Higher Ground's sold out Nectar's Experience 1975 honors the beloved venue with an all star Burlington lineup at 5:30 PM, with proceeds going to the King Street Center and the Boys and Girls Club. And for something different, you can swing dance aboard the Spirit of Ethan Allen with Vermont Swings out on the lake from 6:30 to 9 PM. Looking a little further out, the new high school and tech center is offering free community tours on select dates if you want a peek inside the campus.

There are 3,048 of you reading this every week, and 70% of you actually open it, which kind of floors me and isn't something I take for granted. Right now 29 readers chip in to keep this going, which works out to a little under 1%, and I'd love to get that closer to 3% so the Btown Brief feels like it can stick around for the long haul. We just hit one year and I'm hoping for many more.
Here's what goes into it. Every week, I sort through TONS of local sources: Seven Days events, Front Porch Forum calendar, Facebook events, Hello Burlington, Love Burlington, Meetup.com, Eventbrite, Church St Marketplace calendar, Flynn, Higher Ground, Vermont Comedy Club, and then news stations like VTDigger, Seven Days, WCAX, WPTZ, Vermont Public, Community News Service, VT Cynic, The Other Paper, Vermont Business Magazine, Williston Observer, MyChamplainValley, The Charlotte News, to keep you connected. I do all of it around a night-shift job, so your support honestly makes a real difference. It takes a long time to curate and write about all this local content, so if this lengthy newsletter saves you time, or has introduced you to new experiences in Burlington, then definitely consider chipping in!
2026 goal: 5,000 subscribers. We're at 3,048 right now. If you know someone who'd get something out of this, send them to BtownBrief.com.

Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak said "freedom is not simply a moment in history," per Vermont Business Magazine.
The city's celebration runs Saturday from 1 to 9 p.m. across City Hall Park and Church Street Marketplace, with food vendors, live performances, and family activities under this year's theme of freedom as both legacy and ongoing work. Organizers told NBC5 the day goes on rain or shine, with some activities moving indoors if the weather turns. South Burlington adds its own programming, including Friday evening's community dinner.
Founder Nectar Rorris recalled that among the city's clubs, "only Nectar's was free," per Seven Days.
A year after the Main Street institution closed without fanfare, musicians who played the room in the 1970s and 1980s reunite Sunday at the Higher Ground Ballroom for a sold out tribute. Rorris, who opened the venue in 1975 and sold it in 2003, says the old spinning marquee still sits dark and frozen above the empty storefront. Proceeds go to the King Street Center and the Boys and Girls Club of Burlington.
Councilor Allie Schachter called the final plan "a model of what we can accomplish," per Seven Days.
The 10 to 1 vote, with Councilor Evan Litwin the lone no, locks in a 6 percent municipal property tax bump, so the owner of a median $365,000 home will pay roughly $191 more next year. New spending includes $150,000 for added police and private security downtown and in the Old North End, plus $1 million to market waterfront and downtown events. This is the third straight year the city has had to close a multimillion dollar gap, and both the mayor and council Democrats expect a similar squeeze next season.
Public Works director Chapin Spencer urged drivers to stay "mindful and aware of the new traffic patterns," per WCAX.
After roughly six decades of planning, the outbound lanes toward I-189 open the morning of Monday, June 29, with inbound lanes following Tuesday, June 30. The timing dovetails with this Sunday's mile race on the new stretch, the one chance anyone gets to travel it on foot. Anyone routing through the South End should brace for new patterns and a little early confusion as drivers learn the connector.
Vermont Green's Patrick Infurna said Vermont "has become a soccer state in a really major way," per NBC5.
With the tournament rolling, the piece maps where fans can gather, from City Hall Park's outdoor screen to bars and breweries like RiRa, Switchback, and Zero Gravity. Organizers tie the enthusiasm to a genuine local surge built around UVM, Vermont Green FC, and youth programs. Several of those watch spots overlap with the events featured up top, so you will have plenty of company for the matches.
One administrative assistant said the network is "squeezing a system run dry," per VTDigger.
The cuts at Vermont's largest health provider total more than 140 jobs and an estimated $9.5 million in yearly savings, a sliver of the network's goal to trim $300 million over three years. Leadership says it focused on administrative and non patient facing roles, but unions counted dozens of patient facing positions among the losses, including nurses, emergency department social workers, and a cytogenetics lab now slated to close. With the system reporting daily losses near $460,000, staff worry longer wait times and thinner coverage are on the way.
Gov. Phil Scott said "basic concern for fairness" drove the veto, per Seven Days.
The veto halts S.190, which would have let the Green Mountain Care Board cap hospital charges sooner for plans sold through Vermont Health Connect and for school employees. Scott argued any savings should reach every insured Vermonter rather than a select group, while sponsor Sen. Ginny Lyons countered that the move shields insurers over patients. With no veto session currently scheduled, the bill stalls right as affordability pressures and the UVM Health layoffs dominate the conversation.
One shopper once called Macy's "the cornerstone of the mall," per WCAX.
Developer Don Sinex, majority owner of the long vacant downtown building, says he has approached Amazon about turning it into a warehouse now that Burlington High School has graduated its final class from the space. Current zoning would allow it, though the city flags traffic as a concern, and Essex rejected a similar Amazon pitch not long ago. Sinex also signaled the nearby former L.L. Bean and part of the old Town Center Mall could be demolished as part of a wider redevelopment.
The church pursued bankruptcy "to resolve dozens of sex abuse claims involving former priests," per Vermont Public.
A bankruptcy judge approved the $3.13 million sale of the diocese's Joy Drive property to Northeast Territories, with most administrative staff relocating to St. Michael's College in July. The bankruptcy stems from claims by more than 100 abuse survivors, and legal bills have already topped $2 million. Parish assets, shifted into separate trusts years before the filing, remain a major sticking point as creditors argue the move was meant to shield church wealth from victims.
Homeowner Joe Haynes called the damage "pretty unbelievable," per WCAX.
The National Weather Service sent a survey team Friday to confirm whether Thursday's destruction was an actual tornado, with the hardest hit area along Route 4 between the high school and Bridgewater Mill Mall. Roofs were peeled and old trees toppled off Echo Ledge Road, though no one was hurt. That same volatile system is the one that finally cleared the region, leaving Burlington its quieter weekend.
The roundup promised "unbeatable Vermont summer vibes," per Seven Days.
Seven Days' weekly list reaches beyond the Queen City to regional draws like the Founders Celebration Dog Party at Dog Mountain in St. Johnsbury and the Rattling Brook Bluegrass Festival in Belvidere. Closer to home, the picks fold in Burlington's Juneteenth and the Lamoille County Players' staging of The Addams Family. Worth a scan if you are game to drive a bit for the weekend.
Rory Van Tuinen said ayahuasca "showed me the potential that I had for change," per Seven Days.
Waterbury native Van Tuinen reads from his new recovery memoir, Awakening the Heart, this Friday at 6 p.m. at Zenbarn in Waterbury Center, a free event that also covers Vermont psychedelic policy reform. He credits the plant medicines ayahuasca and ibogaine for finally breaking more than a decade of opioid dependency, treatments that remain illegal in the U.S. and carry documented risks. Public and scientific interest in ibogaine has grown lately, including a recent federal executive order pushing research and access.
One student said her school "is like a big family," per Seven Days.
This Gen Zero installment visits tiny schools in Rutland and Orange counties, where students describe tight relationships, a complete lack of anonymity, and creative workarounds to reach classes their buildings cannot offer. The story lands as Vermont's new education law pushes toward larger regional high schools, citing broader access to programming. The students and teachers interviewed largely disagree, making the case that small can serve kids well. I know firsthand how much weight that carries. I went from a class of 350 kids to a graduating class of just 20 (after moving to Bethel), and having that tight-knit feeling of truly knowing my peers made a massive difference in how I grew up.
Quick Hits
Crews pulled someone from a swampy stretch near North Beach Tuesday morning after the person spent the night in roughly five feet of water, clinging to cattails to stay afloat. The terrain was so tricky that responders needed the police drone team to find their way back to shore. The victim was carried out by litter and taken to UVM Medical Center for possible hypothermia.
Companies whose drivers get wedged on the Notch section of Route 108 now face a $10,000 fine, ten times the old penalty, with steeper charges if the rig blocks traffic. Gov. Scott signed the bill Tuesday and the new fines take effect July 1. A familiar summer headache for VTrans, which has tried chicanes and signage to keep trucks away.
U.S. Navy sailors will visit August 24 through 30 for Burlington's first Navy Week, tied to the nation's 250th birthday. Expect Navy Band performances, a look at Vermont's naval history, and chances to meet sailors. Fitting, given the Navy traces its origins to nearby Whitehall, New York.

Vermont Green FC: Men Surrender Late Lead Against Seacoast as Women Prepare for AC Connecticut Following Road Draw
The Vermont Green FC women’s team preserved their undefeated season with a hard-fought 1-1 draw on the road against the Hudson Valley Crusaders. The Green took the lead in the 27th minute when Tess Barrett capped off a patient buildup with a slotted finish, assisted by Neve Renwick. Despite strong defensive work and multiple saves from captain Olivia Shippee, Hudson Valley managed to find the equalizer in the 74th minute. The Women in Green are now looking forward to a home matchup against AC Connecticut, a team they trounced 7-0 earlier this season in a match that featured six different goalscorers. The women's side returns to Virtue Field on Friday, June 19, at 7 p.m. to host AC Connecticut for Mental Health Awareness Night.
On the men's side, Vermont Green FC dropped their first points of the USL2 season following a dramatic 2-2 draw against Seacoast United in the Twin State Derby. The Green controlled the tempo early on, racing to a 2-0 advantage after Aidan Godinho curled a left-footed strike into the net in the 27th minute, followed three minutes later by an acrobatic volley from Jeremy Francou. However, Seacoast United answered back in the 53rd minute and eventually broke Vermont's hearts deep into stoppage time with an equalizing free kick that deflected off Nick McHenry’s head. The men's squad will look to bounce back at home on Saturday, June 20, at 7 p.m. against Boston City FC.

That’s All, Burlington!
Whatever the clouds decide to do this weekend, there is no shortage of ways to fill it, from World Cup fries and waterfront cleanups to creemees on the Parkway and a proper send off for an old favorite. Get out there, support the neighbors putting these things on, and give the dads in your life a good Sunday. The linked events above have all the details if anything caught your eye.
