Podcast Picks of the Week:

Sometimes you don’t want to read, you want to listen. So if you enjoy local podcasts about Vermont, you might enjoy this recent episode:

On News Talk WVMT's "Morning Drive," Ward 7 Rep Evan Litwin joined hosts Anthony and Dan to discuss Burlington's syringe service program, revealing the stunning statistic that one city house distributed 945,000 syringes to roughly 1,000 people. While clarifying the program is a statewide best practice and not a Burlington-specific policy, Litwin argued that a critical lack of oversight has led to nearly half the needles being unaccounted for, calling for "quarterly unannounced audits" of providers. He directly linked the city's broader crisis to its "failed policies," specifically the "defunding" of the police department. Litwin stated the city has only hired two officers this year, leaving it struggling to manage public safety and address the "epicenter of Vermont's drug crisis." Local Podcast Roundup

Recent episodes from Vermont's podcast scene provided key updates on state politics, community initiatives, and local life. The Frequency tackled sticker shock over potentially higher health care costs and the role of new public art in Burlington. Vermont Edition visited Grafton in Windham County for its "Town by Town" series and also aired a segment on local programs offering veterans a connection to nature. The morning drive on WVMT featured a busy day of civic updates, hosting conversations with Vermont Secretary of State Sarah Copeland Hanzas, Progressive Party Chair Bill Hunsinger, and Burlington City Councilor Evan Litwin on the Syringe Services Program. T-switching gears, The Octagon offered a different perspective, welcoming two Stowe High School seniors to reflect on their experiences growing up in town.

Volunteer Opportunities of the Week:

Volunteer with Vermont Adult Learning

Vermont Adult Learning is looking for a few Burlington volunteers to help adults build skills in reading, English language learning, and basic computer use. The organization works with learners from all backgrounds, and volunteers often become the steady support people rely on as they work toward diplomas, job readiness, and everyday confidence.

They’re currently seeking a weekly computer instructor (teaching email, Google/Microsoft basics, and safe browsing) and one-on-one literacy tutors for students in their reading and ELL programs. Teaching or tutoring experience helps, especially for literacy roles, but the traits they value most are patience, adaptability, and a willingness to listen.

If you want to learn more, reach out to Volunteer Coordinator Forrest Gardner at [email protected] or 802-275-4933. See the original post here.

Enjoy Wii Bowling for Great Cause!

Do you enjoy the satisfying sound of a virtual strike? Here’s a wonderful opportunity to share your love for Wii Bowling and make a meaningful connection right here in our community. Cathedral Square is looking for patient and caring volunteers to help adults with developmental delays set up and play the game together. Hosted at the Thayer House (1197 North Ave, Burlington). If you have a knack for the game and a kind, supportive spirit, check out this volunteer opportunity.

You can respond on the United Way website to get started!

202+ Things to Do in Burlington

Five more to help you make the most of late fall before winter truly, truly sets in.

Take a quiet walk through the Intervale where the fields have turned golden and the last leaves hang on the trees while woodsmoke drifts from nearby houses. Visit the Fleming Museum on a chilly afternoon and spend some unhurried time exploring art and history inside the warm galleries. Stop into August First for coffee and a pastry while the windows fog and the air outside stays cold and gray. Head to Oakledge Park for a lakeside walk where there’s very few people to bother you, where the water feels still and endless. End your day at the Vermont Comedy Club for a show that cuts through the early darkness with a bit of laughter.

Working on the winter time list of activities for the season!! In the meantime, here’s the old summer list: 202+ Things to Do
